Blindness Awareness
October is recognized for many things including the beautiful colors fall brings and the fun costumes worn for Halloween, however, not everyone is given the gift of sight in order to see these fun festivities and alluring views. According to the world health organization, there are 39 million people worldwide who are completely blind. October is a month to draw awareness to these individuals and encourage proper eye care in order to avoid increasing numbers of those that are going blind.
What is blindness caused by?
The leading causes of blindness worldwide are age-related eye diseases including cataracts, macular degeneration and glaucoma. Cataracts are caused by protein buildup in the lens of the eye causing cloudy vision. Macular degeneration is typically caused by retinal deterioration and causes central vision in the eye to get blurry. Glaucoma is caused by damage to the optic nerve that causes loss of peripheral vision. These 3 conditions make up most causes for blindness.
How is blindness diagnosed?
Blindness is typically diagnosed through an eye exam with an optometrist, where the doctor will administer a series of tests that measure the clarity of vision and the health of the inside and outside parts of the eyes. Not all people who are diagnosed as blind have complete vision loss, though. Some people who are blind are still able to make out shadows, light, and some colors.
Treatments/ preventions for blindness.
Eighty percent of all visual impairment is preventable due to treatments for age-related eye diseases which are the leading cause in blindness. Scheduling regular eye exams with an optometrist helps ensure any eye diseases are diagnosed in the early stages. Early diagnoses can prevent and even reverse some vision loss due to these diseases so schedule an appointment today!
Vision Therapy Success Story
Our Five Points Eye Care Vision Therapy Clinic helps kids who are struggling to read and have problems with their schoolwork. We also work to give them back their confidence. Allie is one such success story.
Allie was skipping words, repeating groups of words and having trouble staying focused on schoolwork. After beginning Vision Therapy, she is more confident in class and her fluency has increased to a normal grade level. She has fewer errors when reading and actually reads for pleasure now! Allie’s family feels that Vision Therapy has been a life-changing experience for her and that Dr. Meg is a blessing. They will definitely be referring students to the program!
The Fred Award
Every month, we have our employees nominate another employee for our “Fred Award.” A “Fred” is someone who goes out of their way to uphold our practice’s core values of Excellence in Eye Care, Patients Come First, and Leading by Example. As a practice, we not only want our employees to come to work to get the day’s job done, but to strive to work harder each and every day for the sake of the practice as a whole.
The Fred Award for the month of October goes to Kathy!
Kathy is the face of Five Points Eye Care. She is always wearing a smile and ensures that patients feel welcomed at the beginning of their exams and appreciated when they check out. Outside of patient care, Kathy is willing to do whatever is necessary to help our team run smoothly. Kathy, we love you!
