Maintaining Healthy Vision as We Age

Adults and BVD

A lot changes as we get older, including our eyesight.

The Top Age-Related Vision Changes

Some of the most common changes we can experience with our vision as we get older include:

  • Requiring more light to see. The older we get, we might begin to need more light to see clearly, so don’t be too surprised if you start needing additional work lamps and reading lights over time.
  • This number is expected to decrease, but 80% of people over age 45 develop presbyopia. The lenses in their eyes become less flexible, making it increasingly difficult to focus on near objects or words on a page. Presbyopia is the reason many people need bifocals or transition lenses.
  • Increasing sensitivity to glare. This is a problem especially while driving, and polarized lenses can help.
  • Changes to color perception. As we get older, colors we see can yellow or dull somewhat.
  • Reduced production of tears. We need tears to keep our eyes healthy and maintain clear vision, so dry eye can be a problem.

Sight-Threatening Conditions and Age

While all these changes can be frustrating to live with, and even though we can correct presbyopia with reading glasses and use eye drops to treat dry eye, there are also a range of vision problems that become more common as we get older and are a much more serious threat to eyesight. These include diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma, and retinal detachment.

Medicine and technology have already come a long way in treating or slowing the progress of these eye conditions, and they will only continue to improve prognoses in the future. However, the earlier we can catch the warning signs, the better it is for the patient’s eyesight. This is why regular eye exams become increasingly important as we get older.

Vision Therapy Success Story

Our Five Points Eye Care Vision Therapy Clinic helps kids who are struggling to read and have problems with their schoolwork. We also work to give them back their confidence. Zeb is one such success story. Zeb had difficulty with school sports, transferring words from text to paper, keeping his place when transferring and math due to being unable to keep numbers lined up correctly.

He had been having these issues from pre-K until 3rd grade. Since completing Vision Therapy, he rarely makes these mistakes and if he does he actually catches it himself. He is better at sports and is finally able to track the ball. Zeb’s family feels that Vision Therapy and Noemi has changed their “baby’s” life forever and they are very grateful to her!

The Fred Award

Noemi OsorioEvery month, we have our employees nominate another employee for our “Fred Award.” A “Fred” is someone who goes out of their way to uphold our practice core values of Excellence in Eye Care, Patients Come First, and Lead by Example. As a practice, we not only want our employees to come to work to get the day’s job done, but to strive to work harder each and every day for the sake of the practice as a whole.

The Fred Award for the month of October goes to Noemi! Noemi went out of her way to step in when a few shifts needed to be covered in our clinic. She is always ready and willing to provide support wherever it may be needed. For these things and so much more, we appreciate you, Noemi! Thank you for everything you do!
