Why Do We Cry?

Crying is the only physiological function that is unique to humans, and we actually have 3 different types of tears!

Basal Tears:

These tears are in our eyes all the time that protect, nourish and lubricate the eyes. These tears are made up of three layers: A mucus layer which keeps tears fastened to eye, aqueous layer which keeps in hydration and keeps out invasive bacteria, and an outer lipid layer which keeps the surface smooth.

Reflex Tears:

The second type of tear is known as reflex tears, and they appear in large quantity to protect the eye from irritants such as wind, smoke, or the chemical odors. Reflex tears help to keep away harmful substances because the aqueous layer contains antibodies that keep the eye clear of microorganisms.

Emotional Tears:

This type of tear is unique to humans. Scientists don’t know why we emotionally cry but there are various theories. One theory suggests tears developed as a silent signaling system to let others respond to us when we are vulnerable without alerting predators. Others believe it’s a way to elicit compassion. There’s also the argument that crying helps to alleviate stress.

Vision Therapy Success Story

Our Five Points Eye Care Vision Therapy Clinic helps kids who are struggling to read and have problems with their schoolwork. We also work to give them back their confidence. Lily is one such success story.

Lily was failing school, had poor handwriting and struggled to sit and read for long periods. Her eyes had trouble working together and tracking words as she was reading. After beginning Vision Therapy, Lily now has a new gained confidence and is excelling at school and reading! Teachers have even noticed the great improvement! Her family feels that Noemi is a wonderful therapist who is encouraging and very uplifting and has already recommended Vision Therapy to others.

As a practice, we not only want our employees to come to work to get the day’s job done, but to strive to work harder each and every day for the sake of the practice as a whole.

The Fred Award for the month of April goes to… Michelle Farquharson!

Michelle continuously shows her dedication to the Five Points Eye Care team through countless acts of selflessness. Michelle always ensures that her work is done to the best of her ability, even if that means staying beyond typical working hours to execute the best work possible.
