How old does my child have to be to wear contact lenses?
When do I know if my child is ready?
There isn’t a “right age” for a kid to start wearing contact lenses. Anyone realistically can be fitted for contacts, but it requires a level of responsibility and the ability to follow a wear-and-care routine. A telling sign your child might be ready for these responsibilities is if they have a good hygiene routine, and if they are willing to do chores without being asked repeatedly. These two signs show they should be able to maintain contacts in a safe manner, and with enough responsibility to hold themselves accountable for maintaining a good routine.
Kids often also start to ask if they can wear contacts when they feel ready for this new step. Interest in wearing contact lenses should come from your kids only! If your child isn’t interested in trying contacts, they will be far less motivated to take good care of their lenses.
What is a proper maintenance routine?
All contact lenses have different wear times and therefore require different levels of maintenance. Make sure you pay attention to your optometrist as they instruct you on how to properly maintain your specific set of contacts. Although there are certain differences between different contact lenses, there are some steps you can take so that no matter the contacts you are in, you exhibit proper hygiene and keep your eyes safe.
Always make sure to wash your hands before inserting or removing contacts. Immediately after removing them, soak your contacts in a cleaning solution recommended by your optometrist. Another important part of your routine should be to regularly replace your contact lens holder and change the solution each time you clean them. Do not “top off” the solution as this can cause bacteria to grow in the solution that is supposed to clean the lenses!
Vision Therapy Success Story
Our Five Points Eye Care Vision Therapy Clinic helps kids who are struggling to read and have problems with their schoolwork. We also work to give them back their confidence. Lily is one such success story.
Caleb had a lack of focus going from the board at school to the papers on his desk as well as convergence problems and possible dyslexia. After beginning Vision Therapy, he has expressed more of an interest in sports and has more confidence while playing them. Because of his evaluation here, he will be tested for dyslexia, which might have gone undetected otherwise. Caleb’s family feels that Vision Therapy is “quality care with kindness” and would definitely recommend it to others.
The Fred Award
Every month, we have our employees nominate another employee for our “Fred Award.” A “Fred” is someone who goes out of their way to uphold our practice core values of Excellence in Eye Care, Patients Come First, and Lead by Example. As a practice, we not only want our employees to come to work to get the day’s job done, but to strive to work harder each and every day for the sake of the practice as a whole.
The Fred Award for the month of August goes to Carley, KC and Amanda!
These “optical sisters” stepped up to an unexpected challenge over the past month and exceeded expectations for the sake of patient care. While the whole practice came together to conquer this challenge, these ladies went above and beyond in their work. Congratulations, KC, Carley and Amanda!
