Kids often struggle to adjust to having to wear glasses
They’re already used to not being able to see clearly; the strange feeling of the glasses on their nose and ears and possibly teasing from their peers might not seem like a great trade for clear vision. What is a parent to do?
The Glasses Should Fit and Be Age-Appropriate
No kid is going to want to tolerate wearing ill-fitting glasses. They’ll find every opportunity to take them off or “forget” them when getting ready for school. If your child’s current glasses don’t fit, we have tools to adjust them at our practice. It could also be time for a new pair. Kids grow fast, and the glasses they wear should be right for their age.
Set Glasses-Wearing Goals Together
Sometimes a child doesn’t want to jump directly into wearing glasses all day, but you can help them get there with some glasses goals. You can even start out as small as asking them to wear their glasses for just half an hour each day if that’s what it takes. Then you can gradually increase the duration of time until they’re wearing their glasses all day.
Stay Strong and Use Reinforcements
You have to stay strong about your expectations for your child wearing their glasses. For situations where you’re not there to make sure they’re keeping the glasses on, feel free to enlist the help of teachers, babysitters, and other authority figures too.
Encourage Your Child to Choose Their Own Frames
One of the best ways to encourage your child to love their glasses and feel confident wearing them is to let them pick their frames! Talk to your optician as well. They may have access to additional colors or sizes and can offer advice about style and fit.
Vision Therapy Success Story
Our Vision Therapy Clinic helps kids who are struggling to read and have problems with their schoolwork. We also work to give them back their confidence. Emily is one such success story. Emily’s focus would go in and out while reading and she experienced double vision as well. Since completing Vision Therapy, she not only graduated out of bifocal glasses, she doesn’t need glasses at all! Emily’s family would absolutely recommend Vision Therapy to others and feels that Noemi was a pleasure to work with and helped their daughter tremendously!
The Fred Award
Every month, we have our employees nominate another employee for our “Fred Award.” A “Fred” is someone who goes out of their way to uphold our practice core values of Excellence in Eye Care, Patients Come First, and Lead by Example. As a practice, we not only want our employees to come to work to get the day’s job done, but to strive to work harder each and every day for the sake of the practice as a whole.
The Fred Award for the month of August goes to Elizabeth! Elizabeth has been the Fred Award personified. She selflessly offered to take over someone else’s shift while they were on vacation in addition to personally helping a patient with reduced mobility navigate the office for the duration of their appointment. She did both of these things with a smile and a sunny disposition. Thank you for everything you do, Elizabeth!
