There Is A Connection Between Vision and Sleep!

eye doctor, Sleeping Woman in Athens, GA

Sometimes it’s hard to get a full night’s sleep, but when we don’t, we definitely feel it.

Sleep Deprivation Compromises Eye Health

We all know that it’s easier to get catch a cold, gain weight, have high blood pressure, mood changes and memory loss if we don’t get enough sleep, but it also impacts our eyes. In order to replenish themselves and function well throughout the day, our eyes need at least five to eight hours of sleep per night. The longer you go without enough sleep, the more you might notice symptoms like eye strain, redness, twitchy eyelids, and dry eye.

Turn Off Blue Lights Before Bed

No matter how convenient our laptop, tablet and smartphones are, biologically speaking, our eyes still find these high-tech devices very confusing. They all put out a lot of blue light. In nature, the only source of blue light is the sun, so when we see blue light, our eyes think it’s still daytime and that we should be awake!

Wear Contacts? Give Your Eyes the Night Off!

Taking your contacts out at night might not affect your overall health or your quality of sleep, but it does make things harder on your eyes. Our eyes get oxygen directly from the air. Contact lenses block air from reaching them, especially during the hours our eyes are closed for sleep.

So remember to set some time aside each night to wind down without blue light, take out your contact lenses before bed, get five to eight hours of sleep (preferably eight) every night. Come see us every year to make sure your eyes are staying functional and healthy!

Vision Therapy Success Story

Our Vision Therapy Clinic helps kids who are struggling to read and have problems with their schoolwork. We also work to give them back their confidence. Carson is one such success story. Carson had processing issues, which manifested as reading slowly and having difficulty with copying info in school. In addition, he had an eye turn. During Vision Therapy, it was determined that Carson did not use both of his eyes at the same time. After completing therapy, he is now able to focus and use both eyes together. His family loved the staff, especially Noemi and would absolutely recommend Vision Therapy to others!

The Fred Award

Every month, we have our employees nominate another employee for our “Fred Award.” A “Fred” is someone who goes out of their way to uphold our practice core values of Excellence in Eye Care, Patients Come First, and Lead by Example. As a practice, we not only want our employees to come to work to get the day’s job done, but to strive to work harder each and every day for the sake of the practice as a whole.

The Fred Award for the month of November goes to Katie, Stacy and Amber!

All three of these stellar employees came together to help out with a difficult situation and never thought twice about it. We are lucky to have them!
