The Inner Workings of the Eye
Have you ever stopped to think about how amazing the human eye is? They arguably connect us to our surroundings more than any other sense and make so many activities we take for granted possible, from driving to reading to looking at our loved ones’ faces. But how do they do all that?
How the Parts of the Eye Help Us See
- Cornea: the clear layer at the very front of the eye that allows light inside.
- Iris: the colorful, circular muscle that contracts and expands to control the amount of light entering the eye.
- Lens: a clear disc that changes shape in order to focus on objects at different distances. (This is different from the lens in a camera, which is rigid and must physically move in order to change focus.)
- Retina: a thin layer of tissue at the back of the eye covered in light-sensitive cells called rods and cones.
- Optic nerve: the nerve that transmits visual information from the retina to the brain for processing at an estimated rate of around a million bits per second!
Help Your Eyes Stay in Good Shape
We will never stop being amazed by the way all the many parts of the eye work together to make vision possible. Being as complex as eyes are, though, there are quite a few ways things can go wrong if they aren’t getting the care they need. That’s where we come in! Make sure to let us know if you’ve noticed any recent changes in your vision or have been experiencing any eye-related symptoms. We look forward to seeing you!
Vision Therapy Success Story
Our Vision Therapy Clinic helps kids who are struggling to read and have problems with their schoolwork. We also work to give them back their confidence. Jaden is one such success story. Jaden’s right and left eyes were not working together properly and it was causing problems with his ability to focus on tasks in school. Since completing Vision Therapy, his eyes are in sync and his ability to focus has improved. His family would definitely recommend Vision Therapy to others. They feel that the program, while intensive, was rewarding due to the results.
The Fred Award
Every month, we have our employees nominate another employee for our “Fred Award.” A “Fred” is someone who goes out of their way to uphold our practice core values of Excellence in Eye Care, Patients Come First, and Lead by Example. As a practice, we not only want our employees to come to work to get the day’s job done, but to strive to work harder each and every day for the sake of the practice as a whole.
The Fred Award for the month of May goes to Marie! During a very uncertain time, Marie got to work picking up extra jobs in order to take some of the burden away from others that had their plates full. Marie exemplifies what teamwork should look like: helping another out for the greater good of the practice, often without others knowing what they are doing since they make it look easy.
