Cataract Treatment Then and Now

cataract surgery in Athens, GA

In the US alone, cataracts affect over 20 million adults 40 and older and half of all seniors age 80 and up. Over time, the lenses in our eyes can become clouded by clumps of protein, resulting in worsening symptoms like reduced night vision, light sensitivity, glare, halo effects around lights, dim or cloudy vision, more frequent changes to glasses prescriptions, faded colors, and double vision in a single eye.

A Brief Cataract Surgery Timeline

Cataract surgery is actually one of the oldest known surgical procedures, with the earliest record of it being from 600 BC! Back then, cataracts were treated through the couching technique which involved smacking the eye with a blunt object to dislodge the lens into the eye. When it worked, it allowed the patient to see again, but at the cost of any ability to focus their vision. Eventually, couching was done with a sharp instrument rather than a blunt one, but it wasn’t until 1747 that the procedure saw significant improvement although there still wasn’t a way to replace the opaque lens with a clear one.

Modern Cataract Surgery

Advancements with plastics and silicone finally made it possible to restore eyesight without the need for bulky glasses, by replacing the cataract-clouded lens with an artificial one. Now, 3 million Americans undergo cataract surgery each year, and the success rate is incredibly high, around 98%. Thanks to those artificial lenses, after surgery, patients are often able to enjoy 20/20 vision (or close to it) for the first time in years or decades!

If you have noticed changes to your vision, it’s a good idea to come in for an eye exam. Your vision is our priority!

Vision Therapy Success Story

Our Vision Therapy Clinic helps kids who are struggling to read and have problems with their schoolwork. We also work to give them back their confidence. Allie is one such success story. Allie skipped words, reread groups of words and couldn’t stay focused on school. Since completing Vision Therapy, she is more confident in class and her fluency has increased to her normal grade level! She actually reads for pleasure! Her family has definitely recommended Vision Therapy to others. They loved working with Dr. Meg and her team.

The Fred Award

KathyRamsay preview
Every month, we have our employees nominate another employee for our “Fred Award.” A “Fred” is someone who goes out of their way to uphold our practice core values of Excellence in Eye Care, Patients Come First, and Lead by Example. As a practice, we not only want our employees to come to work to get the day’s job done, but to strive to work harder each and every day for the sake of the practice as a whole.

The Fred Award for the month of July goes to Kathy! Kathy has been the Fred Award personified. She has selflessly taken on many additional tasks over the past month which has helped the office to run as smoothly as possible amidst everyone’s “new normal.” Her sparkly personality and smile add a much needed lift to our day as well. Thank you for everything you do, Kathy!
